DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
Users of Word Search Creator (TM) must accept this disclaimer of
warranty: "Word Search Creator (TM) Version 3.0 is supplied as is.
The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including,
without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness
for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
consequential, which may result from the use of Word Search Creator (TM)
Version 3.0."
pg 1
Word Search Creator (TM) is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of another
system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal
computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to
provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.
If you find this program useful and find that you are using Word Search
Creator (TM) and continue to use Word Search Creator (TM) after a
reasonable trial period, you must make a registration payment of $25.00
plus $4.00 P&H (US and CANADA) or $6.00 P&H (OVERSEAS)to Owen Associates.
The $25.00 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book.
An example is that this software may be used by any number of people and
may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as
there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being
used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
at the same time.
Commercial users of Word Search Creator (TM) must register and pay for
their copies of Word Search Creator (TM) within 30 days of first use or
their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by
contacting:
OWEN ASSOCIATES
PO Box 307
New Milford,CT 06776
Voice phone (203) 350 - 2194
or
CIS Email to John Owen 71613,3027
Anyone distributing Word Search Creator (TM) for any kind of
remuneration must first contact OWEN ASSOCIATES at the address
above for authorization. This authorization will be automatically
granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering Word Search Creator (TM) immediately (However OWEN
ASSOCIATES must still be advised so that the distributor can be
kept up-to-date with the latest version of Word Search Creator (TM).).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Word Search Creator (TM) along
to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register
their copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
will receive a copy of the latest version of Word Search Creator (TM)
and a large, bound and illustrated Manual. The registered versions of
Word Search Creator (TM) do not contain the red warning screen. Also,
while the file MANUAL.DOC is complete, and covers all functions and
procedures in the operation of Word Search Creator (TM), the printed
manual gives more in-depth detail, examples and illustrations.

-GETTING STARTED-
Word Search Creator (TM) Ver. 3.0 requires an IBM compatible with a
floppy drive (Hard drive prefered), an EGA or VGA monitor, a dot matrix
or laser printer and 384K available memory.
Word Search Creator (TM) Ver. 3.0 does not need to be installed to
operate. You may simply copy all of the associated files to a directory
of your choice. Once you have copied it to a directory, just type WSC at
the prompt to run WORD SEARCH CREATOR (TM). When the title screen
animation is finished, the program is loaded. You will first be prompted
to select the CREATE PUZZLE, PRINTER SETUP, HELP or QUIT. Following is a
brief overview of creating a word search puzzle. A more complete
description can be found under the CREATE-PUZZLE help topic.
Word Search Creator(TM) gives you complete control over the creation of a
word search puzzle. You may enter words where ever you like in the puzzle
manually or let Word Search Creator (TM) automatically place your words
for you. You may also save a puzzle to finish or edit later. When you are
finished entering words, press F5 and the blank spaces will be filled with
random letters. You are now ready to save or print your puzzle.
-MOUSE-
If you are using a mouse, the top menu bar requires a single click and
the pop-up menus and boxes a double click. Clicking out side of a box
will close it.
-CREATE PUZZLE-
Word Search Creator (TM) allows you complete control over creating your
word search puzzles. To begin entering a word, you must first select a
direction function for the word. You choose a direction by pressing one
of the function keys that are listed in a box on the left side of the
screen. You may also select the Direction Keys pop-up menu with a mouse
or the Alt D key combination. Using the mouse or arrow keys, highlite the
desired direction and click the left mouse button or press enter.
The directions are:
MANUAL:
F1 = HORIZONTAL
F2 = VERTICAL
F3 = DIAGONAL_UP
F4 = DIAGONAL_DN
pg 4
ALT F1 = REVERSE HORIZONTAL
ALT F2 = REVERSE VERTICAL
ALT F3 = REVERSE DIAGONAL_UP
ALT F4 = REVERSE DIAGONAL_DN
AUTO:
F6 = HORIZONTAL
F7 = VERTICAL
F8 = DIAGONAL_UP
F9 = DIAGONAL_DN
ALT F6 = REVERSE HORIZONTAL
ALT F7 = REVERSE VERTICAL
ALT F8 = REVERSE DIAGONAL_UP
ALT F9 = REVERSE DIAGONAL_DN
The MANUAL function keys (F1 - F4) allow you to place a word anywhere
you choose within the puzzle frame. To use the manual direction keys,
first cursor the position in the puzzle where you want the word to
start. Next select a direction by pressing one of the manual direction
keys (F1 - F4). Now you may enter the word. As you type, the cursor will
automatically advance in the selected direction. When you complete the
word press the ENTER key to enter it into the puzzle. The word will then
also appear in the clues column. Continue this procedure to enter as
many words as you wish. You are limited only by the size of the puzzle.
If you enter more than 37 words you will be unable to see them all in
the clues column. They will however be entered into the clues list for
printing.
When using the MANUAL REVERSE function keys (ALT F1 - ALT F4) you must
first cursor to the position where the last letter of the word will be.
You may also choose the AUTOPLACE functions for any word while in the
MANUAL mode. Simply select an AUTO direction key (F6 - F9 or ALT F6 -
ALT F9), and enter the word at the prompt. The word will be
automatically placed in the puzzle for you, and added to the clues list.
You may also select the Direction Keys pop-up menu with a mouse or the
Alt D key combination. Using the mouse or arrow keys, highlite the
desired direction and click the left mouse button or press enter. Follow
the above procedure using the menu instead of the function keys.
pg 5
Whether you choose the MANUAL or AUTO direction keys, the final format
of the selected word is the same. The difference is only whether you
choose where in the puzzle the word is placed or the computer chooses.
The HORIZONTAL direction places your word horizontally like this:
YOURWORD
The VERTICAL direction places your word vertically like this:
Y
O
U
R
W
O
R
D
The DIAGONAL_UP places your word in an upward diagonal direction
like this:
D
R
O
W
R
U
O
Y
The DIAGONAL_DN places your word in a downward diagonal direction
like this:
Y
O
U
R
W
O
R
D
REVERSE HORIZONTAL places your word like this:
DROWRUOY
pg 6
REVERSE VERTICAL places your word like this:
D
R
O
W
R
U
O
Y
REVERSE DIAGONAL_UP places your word like this:
Y
O
U
R
W
O
R
D
REVERSE DIAGONAL_DN places your word like this:
D
R
O
W
R
U
O
Y
If the starting position that you choose for your word entry causes
you to exceed the boundries of the puzzle frame, an ERROR box will
appear instructing you on the proper correction procedure. The
procedure is: Use the backspace key to erase the entry. After erasing
all of the letters, press the ENTER key. Cursor to a new position, and
re-select the direction. Now re-enter the word. See also ERROR MESSAGES
help topic.
IMPORTANT! When Word Search Creator (TM) saves a puzzle file it performs
a screen capture of the puzzle frame and saves this to the .PUZ file. If
you wish to save a puzzle without the random letter fill, you must save
it before pressing F5. If you want the saved file to be the complete
puzzle with the random letter fill then save it after you press F5.
pg 7
When you are done entering the words for your word search puzzle, press
the F5 key (or select Fill Puzzle with a mouse), Word Search Creator (TM)
will fill all of the blank spaces in the puzzle with random letters. You
are now ready to print the puzzle, or save it with the random letter
fill. Hold down the ALT key and press the F key to access the FILES
functions (or select Files from the top bar with a mouse). A pop up menu
will appear in the upper left corner of the screen. You may select SAVE,
LOAD, PRINT, NEW PUZZLE, EXIT or CANCEL from the FILES menu. To read more
about these functions, select FILES, LOAD, SAVE, PRINT, NEW PUZZLE or
EXIT from the Help Topics menu. CANCEL closes the FILES menu.
-FILES-
IMPORTANT! When WSC saves a puzzle file it performs a screen capture of
the puzzle frame and saves this to the .PUZ file. If you wish to save a
puzzle without the random letter fill, you must save it before pressing
F5. If you want the saved file to be the complete puzzle with the random
letter fill then save it after you press F5.
To access the FILES menu, hold down the ALT key, and press the F key
(or select Files from the top bar with a mouse). A pop up menu will
appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Six functions are
accessed through the files menu, LOAD, SAVE, PRINT, NEW PUZZLE, CHANGE
DIR and EXIT. (CANCEL closes the menu).Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys or
a mouse to highlite the function that you wish to perform, then press
the ENTER key or the left mouse button to select. For LOAD a box will
appear in the center of the screen. Highlight the file you want using
the arrow keys or mouse, and press enter or the left mouse button. To
load or save from another directory select CHANGE DIR and highlight and
select the directory containing the file you want.To SAVE a file a box
will appear prompting you to enter a file name. You may enter up to
eight characters for the filename. DO NOT enter any extentsion for the
file. The reason for this is that WSC creates and uses two files for
each puzzle that you save, one for the puzzle and another for the clues.
WSC will append the appropriate extentsion to each file. To satisfy
curiousity, these are .PUZ and .CLU. If you wish to SAVE files to
another directory you may enter the PATH to the file or first change
to that directory by selecting CHANGE DIR. If you don't enter a path
the default is the current directory. Following is an example of saving
a file named MYPUZZLE.
To save to the current directory at the Filename prompt type:
mypuzzle
WSC will create the files MYPUZZLE.PUZ, and MYPUZZLE.CLU in the current
directory.
pg 8
To save to another directory, at the Filename prompt type:
\puzzles\mypuzzle
WSC will create the files MYPUZZLE.PUZ, and MYPUZZLE.CLU and save them
to the PUZZLES directory on the D drive.
If any file errors occur while loading or saving a puzzle file, an
error message box will appear explaining the problem. See the ERROR
MESSAGES help topic for further explaination.
IF YOU SELECTED GENERIC IN PRINTER SETUP ALWAYS save your puzzles BEFORE
printing them. If you select PRINT from the FILES menu a box will appear
in the center of the screen asking how many copies you wish to print. It
would be wise to enter 1 at this point unless it is a puzzle that you
have already printed. This will allow you to be sure that you like the
look of the puzzle before printing multiple copies. You will be given
another chance to print more copies after printing is finished.
If any error occurs while initializing the printer, an error message
box will appear explaining the problem. See the ERROR MESSAGES help
topic for further explaination.
Selecting NEW PUZZLE from the FILES menu will clear the puzzle frame and
clues list allowing you to start a new puzzle. Always save your work
before selecting NEW PUZZLE, as all data will otherwise be lost.
Selecting EXIT terminates the program.
pg 9
-LOAD-
To access the FILES menu, hold down the ALT key, and press the F key
(or select Files from the top bar with a mouse). A pop up menu will
appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys or a mouse to highlite LOAD, then press the ENTER key or left
mouse button to select. A box will appear in the center of the screen
listing the files in the current directory. Using the arrow keys or
mouse, scroll to highlight the desired file name. Double clicking on the
name with a mouse, or pressing the enter key will load the highlighted
file. If you wish to load a puzzle file from another directory, choose
CHANGE DIR from the files menu, and follow the same procedure as loading
a file to change directories. Now when you select LOAD you will see the
files in the new directory.
Once the files are loaded the puzzle will appear in the puzzle frame,
and the clues in the clue list. You may now add to or edit the puzzle.
To make editing easier, the loaded puzzle words will appear in red type.
New words added will be entered in black, like an original puzzle.
If any file errors occur while loading a puzzle file, an error message
box will appear explaining the problem. See the ERROR MESSAGES help
topic for further explaination.
-SAVE-
IMPORTANT! When WSC saves a puzzle file it performs a screen capture of
the puzzle frame and saves this to the .PUZ file. If you wish to save a
puzzle without the random letter fill, you must save it before pressing
F5. If you want the saved file to be the complete puzzle with the random
letter fill then save it after you press F5.
pg 10
To access the FILES menu, hold down the ALT key, and press the F key
(or select Files from the top bar with a mouse). A pop up menu will
appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys or a mouse to highlite SAVE, then press the ENTER key or left
mouse button to select. A box will appear in the center of the screen
prompting you to enter a file name. You may enter up to eight characters
for the filename. DO NOT enter any extentsion for the file. The reason
for this is that WSC creates and uses two files for each puzzle that you
save, one for the puzzle and another for the clues. WSC will append the
appropriate extentsions to save each file. To satisfy curiousity, these
are .PUZ and .CLU. If you wish to SAVE files to another directory you
may enter the PATH for the file, or change directories before saving. If
you don't enter a path the default is the current directory. Following
is an example of saving a file named MYPUZZLE.
To save to the current directory at the Filename prompt type:
mypuzzle
WSC will create the files MYPUZZLE.PUZ, and MYPUZZLE.CLU in the current
directory.
To save to another directory, at the Filename prompt type:
\puzzles\mypuzzle
WSC will create the files MYPUZZLE.PUZ, and MYPUZZLE.CLU and save them
to the PUZZLES directory.
If any file errors occur while saving a puzzle file, an error message
box will appear explaining the problem. See the ERROR MESSAGES help
topic for further explaination.
-PRINT-
IMPORTANT! IF YOU SELECTED GENERIC FROM PRINTER SETUP Always save your
puzzles BEFORE printing them. WSC converts a puzzle into a graphic
screen capture format before printing. It does not go back and
reconstruct the puzzle in it's original form after printing. You must
save the puzzle before printing to be able to reconstruct it after.
If you selected Epson or HPLaser the screen contents remain unaffected.
pg 11
To access the FILES menu, hold down the ALT key, and press the F key
(or select Files from the top bar with a mouse). A pop up menu will
appear in the upper left corner of the screen. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW
keys or a mouse to highlite PRINT, then press the ENTER key or left
mouse button to select. A box will appear in the center of the screen
asking how many copies you wish to print. It would be wise to enter 1
at this point unless it is a puzzle that you have already printed. This
will allow you to be sure that you like the look of the puzzle before
printing multiple copies. You will be given another chance to print
more copies after printing is finished. When printing is completed a box
will appear giving you four choices. These are PRINT MORE COPIES, NEW
PUZZLE, HELP or ESC. If you wish to print more copies press F1 and at
the prompt enter the amount of copies you wish to print. If you press
F2 (NEW PUZZLE), you may start another puzzle. Pressing ESC exits the
program. F10 will bring you to HELP from anywhere in the program.
You may also select any of the above from the top bar with a mouse.
If any error occurs while initializing the printer, an error message
box will appear explaining the problem. See the ERROR MESSAGES help
topic for further explaination.
-DIRECTION KEYS-
Press Alt D,or select Direction Keys with a mouse to open the Direction
Keys menu. Using the mouse or arrow keys, highlite the desired direction
and press the left mouse button or the ENTER key. For AUTO functions an
entry box will appear promting you to enter a word. You may use the
backspace key to edit any errors. When you are finished press ENTER to
enter the word into the puzzle and clues list. For the MANUAL functions
you must first cursor to the position in the puzzle where you want to
place the word. Again, you may use the backspace key to edit any errors.
Once finished, press ENTER to place the word in the puzzle and clues
list.
-LPT1 LPT2-
You are being asked to enter the correct port for your printer. If you
are not sure, enter 1, as most printers are connected to LPT1. If you
are unable to print your puzzle, then try LPT2. If it still won't print
call me.
pg 12
-NUMBER OF COPIES-
You are being asked how many copies you wish to print. You may enter any
number here as long as you have enough paper to print them on. If you
are printing a new puzzle it is wise to enter 1, and make sure you like
the look of the puzzle before printing multiple copies. You will be
given another chance to print more copies before exiting the program.
-CLUE TITLE-
Enter a word or words that will be printed above the clues. You may use
upper and lower case. Suggestions:

puzzle without the random letter fill, you must save it before pressing
F5. If you want the saved file to be the complete puzzle with the random
letter fill then save it after you press F5.
Selecting FILL PUZZLE or (F5) will automatically fill all of the blank

-EDIT-
The EDIT function is probably the most complicated function in the
entire program. If you make a spelling error, and don't catch it before
you press the enter key, or simply wish to change a word, you will have
to use the EDIT function. To edit an entry, you must edit both the word
in the puzzle and in the clue list. If you only change the word in the
puzzle you will end up printing extra clues.
To access the EDIT function hold down the ALT key and press E or select
Edit from the top bar with a mouse. A box will appear instructing you to
use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to highlite the word you wish to edit. As
you press an arrow key the highlite bar moves up or down the clue list.
When the word that you wish to edit is highlited, press the ENTER key.

-ERROR MESSAGES-
There are three main types of error messages that you may encounter in
WSC. These are FILE, PRINTER, or the WORD WON'T FIT message. There are
three types of file error messages, UNABLE TO LOCATE FILE, FILE CLOSE
ERROR and FILE READ ERROR. Probable causes are listed in the box if
appropriate. The UNABLE TO LOCATE FILE message will appear if WSC is
unable to open the file that you request. The most likely causes are
a typo in the entry, or an improper path to the file. The FILE READ or
FILE CLOSE errors may be caused by a corrupted file or insufficient
memory.
The UNABLE TO OPEN PRINTER error message may have four possible causes.
The printer is not turned on, or improperly connected. The wrong port
was selected. The printer doesn't recognize the epson escape sequences
(most printers do). Or there is a physical problem or defect in the
printer.
The WORD WILL NOT FIT message will appear in the MANUAL puzzle mode if
your word entry exceeds the boundries of the puzzle frame. You are
instructed to use the backspace key to erase the entry and cursor to a
new location to re-enter the word.
